“Be careful with soulish prayers
– Part 1” (English teaching with
Spanish translation)
Numbers 22 takes us into the Story of Balaam and Balak,
the king of Moab. The king calls upon Balaam to help him
curse the Israelites so that they would no longer be a
threat to him and to his kingdom. Although God clearly
tells Balaam not to go, he chooses to hear what he wants
to hear and goes anyway. Balaam’s eyes in the spirit
were closed because he was too busy looking at all of
the natural riches the king was offering him. The king’s
request for Balaam to come to his aid was a selfish and
soulish prayer. And Balaam does it because he convinces
himself that the riches that the king is offering him
must be a blessing from God. Too often we pray to God
telling him what we want instead of asking him what he
would have us do. It’s so easy to quote scripture
on our behalf to benefit our soulish prayers. Sometimes
the reward seems so good that we convince ourselves that
“it must be God.” |
